Church of the Nativity of the Mother of God

Date of construction: 1888 - 1889 (architect Knüpfer)

Date of consecration: 8 September 1889 by dean of Estonian province - archpriest Popov

By the decree of the Most Holy Synod of June 15, 1884 a new parish, located on the coast of Lake Peipsi, was opened in Alajõe village (Russian name Oleshnitsa). The church was built to the design of a provincial architect, R. Knüpffer, at the expense of the government. The church was built from red bricks topped with cupola and a cross and with a hip-roof belltower. The iconostas was ordered by donations from of the local people.

With the blessing of Bishop Arseny (Bryantsev) of Riga and Mitav on September 7, 1889 the church in Alajõe was consecrated in the name of the Nativity of the Mother of God by Archpriest Simeon Popov.
